Over time, there has been a lot of stuff that has happened (good and bad) that has shaped who I am today.
I have discovered many things about myself so far and I am still learning every day.
Although I have no regrets, I still struggle with life along the way. Everyone does.
“The best thing about the past is that it shows you what not to bring into the future.”
Now that I am a Personal Trainer and helping people every day with something I am truly passionate about. I realised there are some things worth saying. Some things that I believe would have helped me through those hard times.
Note: this letter to my younger self combines thoughts and advice over the years from around 13 bringing me to today at the age of 25.
A Letter To My Younger Self Now That I Am A Personal Trainer
Swimming won’t be the only thing you do, and that’s okay. Sport will help you find yourself more than you will ever know. Dedication, self-achievement, and some healthy competition are all skills that will really stay with you.
When you get taken off the netball court in the grand final for a whole half. Don’t be hard on yourself or let it destroy your passion for playing. You won’t use it as fuel to work harder. Although you should have I’m glad you didn’t. You weren’t meant to be a professional netballer.
Losing doesn’t make you a loser. You will learn that winning doesn’t define who you are as a person. Don’t use it for gratification. You don’t need “winning” to confirm your self-worth. When you acknowledge your own self-worth, your confidence will be soaring.
Mum will always be proud of you.
As some points, your world will feel like it is crumbling around you. You won’t understand it but you have more love than you can ever imagine. You don’t have to do it all yourself and it’s okay to be cared for and supported.
You’ll feel really shy and awkward most of the time. Your journey through fitness and exercise (including sport) will be your gateway to finding confidence with who you are as a person, to learning teamwork and improving your social skills.
You’ll get really lost along the way. You’ll always be changing and trying new things. This doesn’t make you a quitter this makes you an explorer. Embrace it.
When your body is healthy your mind is brilliant. Minimise and be conscious of your time spent with negative people, you are sensitive to them. Be kind. Be kind to yourself. Be kind to others.
You’ll enjoy being active, it will make you happy and help you come into your own skin. You’ll be really hard on yourself but you’ll be proud of your sporting achievements. Don’t stop now. This is just the beginning. Your ability to conquer challenges is limitless, keep pushing through.
Signing up to the gym again will remind you how negative you can be when you can’t do things. You will learn tactics to overcome this when it happens.
Completing a triathlon with your friends will continue to spark your fire for health and fitness. Running your first 10km run was hard. It will be one of your proudest moments. Don’t ever forget the feeling. You’ll start living for it.
You’ll eventually learn your self-worth. Even if it takes a broken heart to realise you need to find it. It’s your own road, no one can walk it for you. Happiness is a choice. Base happiness on your own accomplishments and blessings you’ve been given.
Becoming a Group Fitness Instructor will be one of the toughest things you ever do but also the best. It’ll be hard. You will embrace yourself. Trust your gut, it’s always right.
You’ll meet some amazing people that will show you things and places you didn’t even know existed. That will also help you realise how small some of your problems are.
Pursuing your passion won’t be easy. It will give you purpose.
In the end, it’ll all work out.
